Balance

What is Balance

Balance issues affect us all, especially as we age. This may include feeling unsteady with walking, standing or climbing stairs.  You may also find regular activities around the house are more difficult such as cooking and cleaning because you are not as stable.  Having difficulty with your balance may put you at an increased risk for falling. There are many different factors that contribute to developing issues with balance, but there is not always one single cause. Physical therapy can help address your strength, stability, balance and gait to help with your functional mobility.  Your physical therapist will discuss home safety strategies and help with training with an assistive device such as a cane.

Your physical therapist will evaluate you and create an individualized plan to help with the following:

  • Improve strength: Muscle strength can help improve your balance so your physical therapist will create a plan to address certain weaknesses with specific muscles or movement patterns

  • Improve balance: There are two types of balance which can be addressed through physical therapy which include static balance (maintaining a position while standing or sitting still) and dynamic balance (maintaining a posture/position while moving)

  • Improve your gait mechanics: Working on your walking mechanics can help improve your stability while on your feet as well as working on coordination when using an assistive device such as a walker or cane

  • Reduce your risk of falling: Addressing your strength, balance and gait can help to make you more steady on your feet and reduce your risk of falling

Working to improve your balance can be an important component of your overall physical therapy exercise program, especially if you are recovering from surgery. It can help improve your mobility, and it may provide an important boost to your confidence when walking so you can minimize your risk of falling and enjoy your normal everyday activities.

Dedham Health Physical Therapy offers an extensive balance training program and is able to bridge your individual treatment plan to a long term balance and wellness program with our partnership of the Dedham Health and Athletic Complex and the unique and innovative B.A.S.E.
